Modak  is an Indian sweet dumpling popular in many parts of India. We have altered the recipe and tried making it healthy for diabetes patients. Instead of using rice flour we have used wheat flour for outer covering and filling is made healthy by using paneer and dry fruits instead of jaggery and coconut.

Try out this healthy modak recipe this Ganpati and maintain your health along with enjoyment of sweets.


For the covering:
1 cup whole wheat flour
1tsp oil
Luke warm water as required
For filling:
½ cup crumpled paneer
2 tbsp sugarfree
2 tbsp finely chopped walnut and almond mixture
1/2 tsp cardamom powder
5-7 saffron (kesar) strands


Heat oil till slightly warm and add to the wheat flour. Rub it nicely such that the oil is well incorporated
in the flour.
Add luke warm water and form a stiff dough (Like puri dough). Keep it aside covered with a wet cloth for
half an hour.
Take paneer in a bowl. Add sugarfree, walnut and almond mixture, cardamom powder and kesar
strands. Mix well.
Take a small ball of the dough and press between your palms. Now using your fingers shape them well.
Place the filling in the center. Fold the dough with fingers to enclose the filling with the covering and
give the shape of a fig.
Steam them for 10-12 minutes. When they are done, the covering turns translucent and shiny. Allow it
to cool slightly and then serve.
