Glycemic Index :

    • In 1981, Dr David Jenkins from the University of Toronto in Canada proposed the concept of Glycemic Index (GI) concept to classify carbohydrates qualitatively based on their glycemic response induced in the body. Glycemic Index (GI) provides “numeric physiologic classification of relevant carbohydrate foods” (Jenkins 2002). Glycemic Index relates to the rate of digestion and entry of glucose into the bloodstream.

Hyperglycemia can lead to a metabolic complication known as Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA).  It is a life-threatening but reversible complication, cause due to insulin deficiency and characterized by the severe disturbance in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. DKA is commonly seen in Type 1 diabetes, however, it can also occur in the patient with type 2 diabetes.
